Some Churches think all things ‘New Age’ are ‘evil’ or ‘of the Devil’…Christians online, what’s your view?
Crystals, wicca, ascended masters, TM, Reiki…it’s all so ‘fashionable’ at the moment but some churches (esp the RC and those that are for the real ‘born agains’) are so against these things, they take a really hard line on them and believe them to be the marks of those involved with Black Magic and demons and all kinds…what does the average Christian online make of the New Age??
I don’t object to it in the sense of it being occult power working against God, although i think it can sometimes involve intervention without extensive knowledge, such as God has, about why a particular situation exists, leading to untoward consequences.
I do, however, object to some other aspects of it. Some of it is simply deceitful and a con exploiting the vulnerable and gullible for one’s own ends. Other aspects are bad because they do things like blame people for their own suffering in a manner very similar to the Prosperity gospel. I also object to the fact that people are often playing at spirituality or looking for an easy way out without intellectual rigour or a genuine tradition. It can be patronising to the peoples from whom it supposedly derives, for example. It can also encourage inaction, as does the 2012 stuff.
So basically, most of my time my objection has nothing to do with black magic, and there is a crossover with Christianity here. My big issue with it is that it’s intellectually vapid and tries to offer easy and ultimately uncaring solutions. There are many reflections of this in Christianity too. It also paralyses practical action to make the world a better place.
I have yet to see anything in the New Age movement for which i have much respect. It’s lowbrow, simplistic, anti-intellectual and facile, and often just plain selfish. Then again, the same could apply to many aspects of Christianity, and those are just as bad.
